Celebrating Faculty Endowments

More than 75 leaders, donors, faculty members, and friends of Weill Cornell gathered to honor gifts to faculty endowments on Tuesday, March 22nd. The Celebrating Faculty Endowments Reception featured remarks from dedicated Weill Cornell donors and the educators, researchers, and physicians who have benefited from holding endowed positions.

"All of us in this room should feel proud to be a part of this exciting period of growth in Weill Cornell's history," said Robert J. Appel, Chairmain of the Discoveries that Make a Difference Campaign, "particularly the doctors and scientists, who are the backbone of this medical center, and the donors who support the research that leads to cures." Mr. Appel and his wife, Helen, endowed the Helen and Robert Appel Clinical Scholar Award, which is held by Bassem Masri, M.D., Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine.

Endowed gifts provide essential funding for Weill Cornell's top scientists, inspiring innovation and creativity and accelerating the research that will lead to new possibilities for prevention, treatments, and cures for some of our most persistent and daunting health issues. These restricted gifts are permanently invested to generate a steady stream of income that provides stability against financial downturns in the economy, as well as flexibility to pursue promising avenues of research.

As endowed gifts, professorships and scholar awards bear the donor's name, or a name of the donor's choosing, in perpetuity, and serve as a way to permanently honor those dedicated to the Medical College's mission of education, research, and patient care. Endowment donors are guardians of the future of Weill Cornell, creating a legacy of philanthropy that will sustain and build our commitment to excellent health care for all.
