Our laboratory conducts research on host-parasite interactions with malaria causative parasite Plasmodium falciparum. We focus on large families of protein and receptor modifications to the erythrocyte cell surface following parasite invasion. We are currently developing a new expression system for malaria vaccine testing, investigating the ability of the ghiarrdia protozoan to express malaria proteins. Our research is largely basic science, with an aim towards its application to vaccine and clinically applied research. We collaborate closely with Dr. Kirk Deitsch at Weill Cornell, and welcome students as summer research students, particularly those interested in tropical medicine.
