Hemophilic Joint Disease

My main area of clinical and laboratory interests is to investigate the pathophysiological processes involved in hemophilic joint disease and to develop novel methods for their diagnosis and treatment. In the clinical arena, the role of less expensive modalities for early diagnosis of joint disease are being investigated in collaboration with the Hospital for Special Surgery so that these novel tools could be used more frequently for surveillance. This will help early diagnosis of hemophilic joint disease for appropriate therapeutic intervention.

Other projects in the laboratory include investigating the role of angiogenesis in the pathophysiology of hemophilic joint disease in collaboration with the Molecular Oncology Laboratory of the Childrens' Blood Foundation. Measurement of serological markers of angiogenesis may aid in developing a marker for early joint disease for preventive therapeutic intervention. Also, there may be a potential role for anti-angiogenic therapy as an adjunct to factor concentrates in the management of hemophilic joint disease.

Our laboratory research activities receive generous support from the Hemophilia of Georgia Foundation, The New York Blood Center Hemophilia Services Consortium and the The Childrens' Blood Foundation.
