NF-kB dependent genes in microglia play a contributing role in ischemia-induced neuronal injury. By repressing the expression of these genes using neuroprotectants, research is focused on endogenous protective signaling cascade(s) as a target to achieve neuroprotection after exposure to ischemic stroke. Using an experimental animal model of stroke, research also includes studies on the involvement of CD36, a scavenger receptor, in ischemic injury and defining a role for iNOS in ischemic preconditioning.
