Patricia Murphy, PhD, is a clinical researcher in the Laboratory of Human Chronobiology. The laboratory is located at the Westchester Division of the NYPresbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, in White Plains.

The Laboratory of Human Chronobiology conducts research studies relating to human sleep and circadian rhythms. Many of our research studies are designed to increase understanding of how normal human sleep is regulated across the lifespan, as well as the processes underlying disturbed and disrupted sleep patterns. The research studies involve examining various biological, physiological, and psychological underpinnings of disturbed sleep, including changes in thermoregulation, hormone regulation, and sleep timing (e.g., in shiftworkers or individuals with circadian rhythm sleep disorders). In addition to this basic research, we have assessed non-pharmacological approaches to improving sleep, including timed bright light therapy, melatonin administration, body temperature manipulation, and scheduled naps.

Dr. Murphy received a PhD in Experimental Psychology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio in 1995. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Laboratory of Human Chronobiology in 1997. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, and Associate Director of the Laboratory. Together with the laboratory's Director, Scott S. Campbell, PhD, Dr. Murphy continues to conduct research studies examining diverse topics in humans of all ages, with and without sleep and circadian rhythms disturbance.
