Global Health

I am presently completing a broad range of global health projects. Primarily, my work is focused on women’s health issues (in particular cervical and breast cancer screening) as well as issues pertaining to preterm births. These projects are being run in Tamil Nadu, India and Sao Paulo, Brazil, with intention to expand the programs to other developing countries. I am partnered with the Christian Medical College in Vellore India (Tamil Nadu state) as well as the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.  The Brazilian project is being completed in partnership with Dr Steven Witkin, Professor of Immunology in the Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Approximately 2 months are spent abroad undertaking these projects onsite.

Additionally, I am examining the connection between nutrition and health outcomes in Peru in partnership with faculty members at the San Marcos Medical College in Lima. I spend approximately 1 month completing this research abroad. Finally, I have begun a new project in India relating to diabetes.   Specifically, the project will examine the effectiveness of soluble rice bran to reduce blood glucose levels in diabetics in Chennai, India. In addition to international research initiatives, I am also presently engaged in global health curriculum development with the University of Sydney in Australia.

I welcome student participation in her research projects and have contacts at the WHO and non-profit organizations that would prove useful for students interested in completing international electives.
