Dr. Malta?s broad research objective is to combine her interests in trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with her interest in cognitive neuroscience, the latter of which stems from post-baccalaureate training at Hunter College, CUNY and the NYU School of Medicine Silberstein Aging and Dementia Research Center. Dr. Malta?s interest in PTSD began during graduate school at the University at Albany Center for Stress and Anxiety Disorders, where she co-authored research studies on motor vehicle accident-related PTSD and other stress-related disorders. Her research on aggressive drivers culminated in a forthcoming book on their assessment and treatment. Dr. Malta expanded her interest in trauma through her work with combat veterans at the National Center for PTSD, and through postdoctoral training at the NYU School of Medicine Institute for Trauma and Stress, where she worked with adult survivors of childhood abuse and conducted clinical research on the assessment and treatment of survivors of the World Trade Center terrorist attack. Currently, at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University Program for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Studies, she conducts PTSD treatment research and is developing research that utilizes virtual reality technology to study the formation of trauma memories and cognitive processing in PTSD.
