Genetic epidemiology of prostate cancer

Dr. Rennert?s research interest is the genetic epidemiology of prostate cancer. Her laboratory is investigating the role of genetic factors in the disparity in prostate cancer incidence between high risk (African-American) and low risk (Asian-Indian) populations. The role of candidate inherited susceptibility genes and their association with prostate cancer incidence and disease characteristics in the two populations are being studied.
A second research interest is focused on the development of clinical molecular diagnostic tests and applications. Her current efforts as the Director of the Molecular Pathology Laboratory at NYPH-WCMC are focused on expanding the Molecular Pathology test menu, particularly for molecular virology, molecular genetics, and identity testing. Specific tests under development include quantification assays for the herpes virus panel using real-time PCR, cystic fibrosis testing, and STR analysis for monitoring engraftment following bone marrow transplantation.
