Research Overview
Dr. Strain is nationally and internationally recognized for her research on the endocrinology of obesity, the problems of weight loss maintenance, and treatment of morbid obesity. Currently she serves as Director of Research for Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery. She has bee involved with the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery(LABS) sponsored by NIH. She currently has studies in progress on the effects of bariatric surgery on fat and protein malabsortion, body composition, quality of life after surgery,and brain changes after surgery as studied with positron emission tomography (PET). As part of the LABS consortium studies are in progress regarding body composition changes, quality of life issues, changes in cognitive function and paychosocial issues following surgical assisted weight loss. The resolution of diabetes after weight loss surgery is a current research focus.
