Biography
Dr. Donna DiMichele is a Professor of Pediatrics and of Public Health at Weill Cornell Medical College and Attending Pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. She also serves as Medical Director of The Regional Comprehensive Hemophilia Diagnostic & Treatment Center and Director of the Special Coagulation Research Laboratory.
Dr. DiMichele received her medical degree (M.D.) at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She completed an Internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Denver, Colorado and her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where she was Chief Resident for one year. She remained at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center where she completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. She then completed a research fellowship in Hematology at New England Medical Center Hospital, Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts.
Before coming to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital over a decade ago, Dr. DiMichele was Director of the Hemophilia Center at Children's Memorial Hospital at Northwestern University in Chicago. The author or co-author of more than 100 articles, abstracts and book chapters, Dr. DiMichele has published her work in journals such as Blood, the Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatric Research, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and Hemophilia. She has also presented her research on immune tolerance and inhibitors at a variety of national and international symposia. Dr. DiMichele is a member of the World Federation of Hemophilia, American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the National Hemophilia Foundation and the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis among other professional societies.
In November 2004, Dr. Donna DiMichele was honored with the National Hemophilia Foundation Award of Excellence for Physician of the Year. This award honors distinguished physicians who have made major contributions to the advancement of care for individuals with bleeding disorders.
In 2005, after three years of training as a Faculty Associate in the Division of Medical Ethics at Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. DiMichele was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health. As a pediatric specialist, her goal is to develop a field of expertise with respect to the ethical dilemmas that both generally affect the pediatric patient population and specifically affect children with blood disorders and cancer. One of her current research projects includes exploring the ethical considerations of gene transfer technology (gene therapy) within the hemophilia community. Through her participation in scientific and clinical conferences, she continues to have the opportunity to educate trainees and peers and brings a parallel level of awareness to the ethical integration of new science into the clinical practice of hemostasis.
