1)
All iodinations are to be performed either in Room C632A or in
a hood with a dedicated duct equipped with an activated charcoal
filter. (The efficiency of the filter for trapping iodine is >99.9%)
2)
Notify Radiation Safety of your intention to use the hood and
the date of use and the approximate length of time that you will
require.
3)
Obtain the key to the facility from Radiation Safety located in
Rooms A-0053 and A-0049.
4)
If you are the investigator intending to iodinate, obtain a bioassay
of your thyroid. This is performed at the time you pick up the
key by Radiation Safety personnel using a thin crystal scintillation
survey meter.
5)
Check the hood flow on the dedicated meter. It should be a steady
flow that is greater than 125 lineal feet per minute. If this
is not the case, do not procede any further and notify Radiation
Safety at 6-6964 or 6-4569.
6)
Check the hood and surface to be used within the room for contamination.
Report and excessive contamination to Radiation Safety.
7)
Perform your iodination, utilizing the lead barriers. Keep the
window of the hood as low as practical. Make sure that all surfaces
are covered with absorbent material.
8)
After the iodination, place the waste I-125 (or I-131) in the
containers provided. Segregate liquids and dry waste. Note the
approximate amounts deposited on the inventory card provided.
9)
Check the area for contamination. Clean up any contamination that
you are responsible for. Consult with Radiation Safety if the
spill is extensive.
10)
Return the key to Radiation Safety. At this time, have your thyroid
checked again and the readings recorded.
