Research Overview
Advanced Methodology and Geriatric Depression
Amy L. Byers, PhD, MPH, is an epidemiologist with a background in aging research, methods and biostatistics. Dr. Byers' research focuses on the application of advanced methodology to address complex clinical questions on the onset, course, and outcomes of geriatric depression, and to understand how interventions can modify the decline in health associated with this course. In January 2007, she was awarded a Mentored Career Development Grant (K01) entitled, "The Complexity of Late Life Depression: Bridging Methods and Clinical Substance." The aim of this research is two-fold—to contribute to the understanding of 1. the "vascular depression" hypothesis, and 2. the impact of depression-interventions on reducing disability, through the application of advanced methodology on two established population-based data sets (the Cardiovascular Health Study, CHS, and the Prevention of Suicide in Primary Care Elderly: Collaborative Trial, PROSPECT).
