Residency in General Preventive Medicine

The Department of Public Health offers a two-year ACGME-accredited Residency in General Preventive Medicine. The program emphasizes epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical and preventive medicine, medical care organization, medical sociology, health economics, and education. Training includes a practicum and a didactic component, and participation in a research project is required.

Residents in the General Preventive Medicine residency program obtain the Masters in Public Health (M.P.H.) degree from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and become eligible for certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

Residents also participate in the Department's seminars and teaching program for undergraduate medical students. Applicants who have formal degrees or certificates in public health may be admitted directly to a more advanced phase of the program. The practicum requirements consist of continuing academic experience, didactic sessions and exposure to a variety of field experiences. Residents are encouraged to continue to sharpen their clinical skills in primary care settings.

The program provides each resident with a wide variety of opportunities to design an individual program to meet specific professional goals. Integration of the academic and practicum phases means that the practicum experience can extend over the entire two year period. Residents have more of an opportunity to teach, attend conferences and work with a mentor in an area of special interest, be it clinical or research. This will ensure that, at the completion of the program, the resident has acquired a broad general knowledge of general preventive medicine and a high level of expertise to assume a leadership role in an area of special interest.
