Foundations of Clinical Research

This is a 3-credit, graduate-level course designed for faculty, fellows, and residents, directed by Alvin I. Mushlin, M.D., Sc.M., Chairman of the Department of Public Health. The course is a core component of the Masters Degree and Certificate Programs in Clinical Investigation offered by the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences of Cornell University. The course also is open to those who are interested in developing clinical research projects.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate research questions critically
  • Discuss core epidemiological concepts, including bias and confounding
  • Assess the appropriateness, strengths, and weaknesses of different study designs for answering research questions
  • Demonstrate preference for evidence over authority in the evaluation of clinical research literature

A midterm exam and final papers are required, as is participation in the weekly discussion sections (“lab”).
