Clinical Research Methodology Survey Course

This multidisciplinary course covers the essential methods of clinical research methodology. The course meets once a week for 18 weeks, in Room F-539 of the New York Presbyterian Hospital from 1-2 pm on Thursdays. It is directed by Phyllis G. Supino, EdD and Jeffrey S. Borer, MD, and its faculty includes members of the Weill Medical College Departments of Medicine and Public Health, as well as a number of experts from outside the Institution.

The course, now in its 17th year, is co-sponsored by the Department of Medicine. It is intended for physicians, medical students and other members of the Weill Cornell Medical community who wish to enhance their ability to critically evaluate the published research literature, or who are contemplating (or currently involved in) designing research projects, writing grant proposals, or conducting research for publication in peer-reviewed journals or presentation at medical society meetings.

Its purpose is to provide a broad framework for understanding:

  1. the principles of problem definition and hypothesis construction;
  2. the logic of research design and statistics;
  3. the methodology for determining cost-effectiveness of a program or procedure;
  4. the rationale and procedures for generating and documenting data;
  5. the ethical issues involved in conducting clinical investigations;
  6. the fundamentals of writing a protocol or other research proposal; and
  7. the guidelines for assembling and interpreting results, evaluating and writing scientific manuscripts, and publishing studies.

The course is approved for 18 Category I CME credits (1 credit per session) for eligible participants and is offered to all interested members of this medical community.
