The Division of Medical Ethics sponsors a Seminar Series on important current topics in medical ethics.
The theme of the 2009-2010 series
is Ethics, Technology, and Dignity: An Introduction to Twentieth Century Philosophers. All are welcome to attend.
2009-2010 Seminar Series Description
Medical care is inextricably entwined with technology, but how often do you reflect on the goals and values embodied by our technological practices? How much consideration do you give to the ways in which medical technologies transform our views of health and disease and our understanding of human well-being? And how do we assess those values? Are there universal standards of right and wrong? Can we establish final answers for moral and public policy questions? This seminar attempts to help us reflect on these important issues by looking at the responses of several major thinkers in 20th century philosophy. With them, we will reflect on the nature of technology and the ways in which technologies reflect and transform individuals and communities and we will evaluate whether we can find an adequate basis on which to make moral and policy judgments in bioethics, one that insures that our regard for human dignity remains intact.
