Community and Public Health Programs

Patient and Employee Services

The Division operates programs for opioid dependency that provide detoxification, methadone maintenance, or buprenorphine treatment in a variety of settings. Two opioid dependency programs, the Adult Services Clinic and the Adolescent Development Program, were established by Robert B. Millman, M.D., Division Chief, in the early 1970s. They were combined in November 2008 and renamed the Vincent P. Dole Treatment and Research Institute. Ann B. Beeder, M.D., is currently the Medical Director and Kim Alexander, L.C.S.W., C.A.S.A.C., is the Administrative Director. The program provides comprehensive and individualized methadone maintenance treatment; psychosocial, vocational, medical, and psychiatric services; and ongoing continuing educational programs for staff and patients.

The Midtown Center for Treatment and Research is an outpatient program that treats a wide range of patients with chemical dependency problems. The Acting Medical Director is Ann B. Beeder, M.D., and the Administrative Director is Christopher Sturiano, Ph.D. The Center offers evaluation and referral services, detoxification, buprenorphine treatment, group and individual counseling, and psychiatric treatment. Both the Midtown Center and the Vincent P. Dole Institute serve as a sites for the study of the prevention and treatment of dependency diseases, as well as outreach, evaluation, and treatment of patients with hepatitis C. (See Research section of this website.)

The Division also offers an office- and pharmacy-based unit where patients who have successfully responded to the methadone treatment in the clinics and meet very stringent criteria are seen once a month by one of our physicians in their private offices and are provided a prescription for their methadone dosage at our neighborhood pharmacy.

The Division runs two employee assistance programs. The Employee Assistance Program Consortium (EAPC), directed by Patricia McDonald, D.S.W., serves the approximately 20,000 employees of Weill Cornell Medical College, Rockefeller University, New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Cornell Medical Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The Employee Development Center, led by Jeffrey E. Diaz, A.C.S.W., is available to help the approximately 60,000 employees of about 65 organizations that contract for the Center’s services. Clients include the Whitney Museum of American Art, Thirteen/WNET New York, St. John’s University, The New School, The Boys’ Clubs of New York, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Both programs provide free and confidential evaluation, crisis intervention, and referrals for a wide range of problems affecting employees. The EAPC also offers free group sessions on such topics as parenting, caring for elderly parents, and dealing with stress.
