This information session, co-hosted by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the Department of Pharmacology, will consist of a presentation about careers at the NIH, focusing on Program Officer and Study Review Officer positions. After the presentation, there will be an informal question and answer session. All graduate students and postdoctoral trainees are welcome to attend. Postdocs who have received reviews on a grant application (e.g. NRSA, K award, R21, etc.) will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with Dr. Fung to get his advice on how to respond to the reviews. This seminar, co-hosted by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the Department of Pharmacology, will review the grant application process and provide advice on how to write a fundable grant application. Dr. Fung's biography follows:

Dr. Victor Fung received his A.B. from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry from Stanford University. He did postdoctoral work in Photochemistry at Columbia University.

In July 2008, Dr. Fung retired from NIH where he worked for over 25 years and held several positions: he was the Chemical Selection Coordinator for the National Toxicology Program/NIEHS; the Program Director for Environmental Cancer and the Biological and Chemical Prevention of Cancer in the Division of Cancer Biology at NCI; and finally the Scientific Review Officer for the Cancer Etiology Study Section in the Center for Scientific Review. The Cancer Etiology study section reviews grant applications related to the causal agents, processes, and cells involved in tumor pathogenesis. He is now a consultant on grantsmanship, namely, the preparation of research grant applications.

His areas of expertise include organic chemistry; toxicology; chemical carcinogenesis and mutagenesis; pharmacokinetics; structure-activity relationships analysis; chemical health effects evaluation and hazard assessment; knowledge of Federal laws, agencies, regulations and guidelines pertaining to toxic chemicals; and the NIH Peer Review Process.

2009 Tri-Institutional Career Symposium

Weill Cornell, Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center organize a one-day symposium each year to expose postdoctoral trainees to the range of opportunities for biomedical science Ph.D.s. The day is comprised of panelists from academic and non-academic careers. The panelists speak briefly about their personal experiences and pathways and answer questions. The Craft of Scientific Presentations: A Workshop on Presenting Research

There is a coffee break in the morning, lunch and concluding reception, which offer additional opportunities to network with the speakers.

As a bonus this year, David Jensen, long-time industry scientific talent recruiter and regular contributor to ScienceCareers, will be speaking at a special seminar held at 5:00 pm March 24th, the day prior to the Symposium. The focus of the talk will be "The Inside-Out Job approach to Career Management." Mr. Jensen will also kick-off the Tri-Institutional Symposium on March 25 with a short primer on Job Search Strategies.
