CenterWide Identifier (CWID)

A CenterWide IDentifier, or CWID (pronounced "SEE-weed"), is a standardized seven character username assigned to all new employees the first time they apply for any system account.

This username generally consists of the initials of your name* and the number 20xx where "xx" is a consecutive number starting with "01."** This numbering system prevents users with the same initials from having the same CWID. For example, John P. Smith's CWID would be "jps2001" assuming that he is the first person to have an account with those initials. Janet P. Summers' CWID would be "jps2002", and so on.

You will use your CWID and its corresponding password to log on to all WMC managed resources. Your CWID and password become your ID and digital signature for WMC computing. Once your CWID has been assigned, it can not be changed for any reason unless it is either offensive (e.g., a three letter obscenity or something like "ape2001@med.cornell.edu") or it is incorrect due to an ITS error.

*If you don't have a middle initial, then the first two letters of your first name are used.

**This standardization was put in to practice in August 1998. People employed prior to then have CWIDs that do not follow this convention.
