Q: Doesn't Microsoft Office 2007 use a new document format that causes incompatabilities with older Office versions?
View answer
A: Microsoft Office 2007 does offer a new "Office Open XML" file format that is not compatible with older versions of the suite. These files are easily identified by their file extensions, including .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx. ITS has pre-configured the Office 2007 distribution so newly saved documents default to the traditional .doc/.xls/.ppt formats. ITS strongly recommends all users continue to save in this mode for full compatibility both internally and with other institutions.
