OCTA Contracting Information

This is helpful information for use during the contracting process for Clinical Trials with Weill Cornell Medical College. For additional information regarding applying for a grant, please see: www.med.cornell.edu/research/gra_con/

Definition of a Clinical Trial

In order for a study to be considered a "Clinical Trial", the study must involve ALL of the following elements:

  • Intervention (either biomedical or behavioral)
  • Human Interaction (beyond the informed consent process)
  • Outcome Variables (measures safety and effectiveness of intervention)
  • Prospective Design (Phases I, II, III, IV)

The National Institutes of Health defines clinical trial as "a prospective biomedical or behavioral research study of human subjects that is designed to answer specific questions about biomedical or behavioral interventions (drugs, treatments, devices, or new ways of using known drugs, treatments, or devices). Clinical trials are used to determine whether new biomedical or behavioral interventions are safe, efficacious, and effective..."

Registries and retrospective studies do not fit the definition of clinical trial. Therefore, these studies will be executed through the Grants and Contracts office. Although these types of studies will be processed through the Grants and Contracts Office, the indirect cost rate will be 33%.

For all other types of research projects, please contact the Grants and Contracts office.
