Portable Fire Extinguisher Inspections Portable Fire Extinguishers in New York City are required to be checked monthly and inspected annually. The College contracts this service with Alert Fire Control, an external contractor certified by the New York City Fire Department. All Alert Fire Control employees will carry a NYPH/Weill Cornell ID Badge and should display it when inspecting extinguishers. Following are the Alert Fire Control employees approved by the College to inspect extinguishers:
Alert Fire Control is solely contracted to inspect fire extinguishers. Environmental Health and Safety-related questions or concerns should continue to be addressed directly to EHS staff. If any other external contractor attempts to check extinguishers in your area, please contact EHS. Following is an example of the tag that should be on every College extinguisher:
Tags are replaced annually to indicate the annual inspection. During the year, the tag should be initialed by the contractor monthly after the "monthly check."
