New York City Fire Department Certificate of Fitness for Supervising Chemical Laboratories (C-14)

For those who hold an undergraduate degree (no advanced degrees) and less than 5 years of work experience you must report to the Bureau of Fire Prevention to sit for their exam. This test is administered by the New York City Fire Department, 9 Metrotech Center in Brooklyn, Monday through Friday 9:00am to 2:00pm.

You must have:

  1. A degree in: Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Biology, or any Chemical or Physical Science
  2. A working knowledge of the English language
  3. Attained your 18th birthday on or prior to the test date
  4. Letter of recommendation from employer on College letterhead

Attached are study materials based on Fire Prevention Directive 3RCNY 10-01, the regulation which governs laboratory requirements. These study materials are drawn from C of F tests that were given in the past.

Have all the documentation with you when you go to take this test:

  1. FDNY A-20 form (fill out)
  2. Letter of Recommendation, on College letterhead, signed by your immediate supervisor (sample letter)
  3. Check or money order for $25 payable to the New York City Fire Department
  4. Two pieces of Identification (driver's license, state ID, or passport and one other piece of identification)
  5. Proof of academic degree (copy)

Take:

  • N-R subway to Lawrence Street
  • A-C-F to Jay Street
  • 2-3-4-5 to Boro Hall/Nevins
  • 2-3 to Hoyt
  • O-D-M-N-R to DeKalb

Note: There are guides along the street that will tell you which way to walk.

Exams are Monday - Friday (except legal holidays) 9:00am - 2:30pm. Bring two #2 pencils, a pen, and the above-listed information.
