You may have been exposed to a bloodborne pathogen, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), through a splash or needlesticklsharp exposure while at work. The following medications have been prescribed to prevent possible transmission of HIV from your exposure. It is important to take each dose as prescribed for the greatest benefit in preventing disease. You have been given a medication fact sheet for each drug you will take which explains possible side effects you may have while taking the medication. Please contact SHS at 746-1450 if you have any questions or concerns about the medication. Our hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday. During hours that SHS is closed, please call 746-1450 and ask for the physician on call.
Combivir (Combination of Zidovudine [AZT] 300mg and Lamivudine 150mg)
Take one tablet every 12 hours on an empty stomach (WITHOUT food, one hour before or two hours after eating).
Efavirenz (Sustiva)
600mg tablet, take one (1) tablet at night
Sample dosing schedule:
- 6 am: take Combivir (1 tab) one hour before eating
- 6 pm: take Combivir (1 tab) one hour before eating
- 8 pm: take Efavirenz (1 tab) with food
