Home Directory Quota Notice - 08/2007

This message serves to notify all valid home directory users that the size limit for your home directory is 500 MB, raised from 250 MB in Spring 2007.

To make sure there is sufficient space for everyone we have limited use of home directory storage in the Education Center to all faculty, staff and students in the current 4 yr Medical Curriculum & Graduate Curriculum. To further insure storage space on our servers, please make sure that you are mindful to fall under the maximum limit of 500MBs per home directory at all times. Going over the quota may result in being locked out of your home directory &/or having limited functionality upon logging in with your CWID.

To aid in helping you calculate your home directory quota, we have provided the following methods:

  1. An automatic Home Directory Quota calculator in the form of a dialogue window that is invoked immediately upon logging in.
  2. You may additionally trigger this calculator by launching the file from the computer's dock. Double click the file found in the WCMC Resources folder/Useful WCMC Links/WCMC Home Dir Quotas.
  3. To manually calculate see below.

For detailed orientation information on your home directory, please see:

Home Directory Quota sections of the OS X Tutorial

For details on checking the size of home directories and deleting items:

  1. Click on your home directory icon on the far right of the dock at the bottom of your screen.

  2. This will bring up a "Finder" window with your home directory selected/highlighted on the left pane. While it's highlighted, go to the "File" menu at the top left of your screen and select the "Get Info" option. This will display a new window indicating the size of your home directory. Wait a few minutes as it may take time, depending on how many items you have, to finish calculating the size.
If you're over or close to 500 MBs:
  1. Maintain this "Get Info" window while you select items from your home directory to trash. Each time you "Empty Trash" (found under the Finder Menu) you should see the "Get Info" window re-calculate the size. Do this until you're well under the 500 MB quota.
