Trauma Service(s)
The trauma service at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center introduce the student to the management of patients with blunt and penetrating traumatic injuries. As in other rotations, the student participates in the preoperative, operative and postoperative care of patients at a level commensurate with his or her training.
Cardiothoracic Surgery
The cardiothoracic surgery rotations at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell Campus and Columbia Campus, The New York Hospital of Queens, Montefiore Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital introduces the student to surgical intensive care of the cardiac patients including the diagnosis and management of cardiac dysrhythmias and operative surgery including coronary artery bypass procedures, heart valve replacements and repair of congenital heart defects as well as other non-cardiac thoracic surgery including pulmonary and esophageal procedures.
Burn Center
The Burn Center rotations introduce the student to the care of thermally injured patients. These injuries commonly include scald, flame, chemical, electrical, and contact burns. The student also gains experience with airway and ventilator management, fluid resuscitation, invasive procedures performed at the bedside, wound management, operative procedures and infectious diseases common in burned patients.
Vascular Surgery
The vascular surgery service introduces the student to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of peripheral vascular diseases. This clerkship affords the student an excellent opportunity to become proficient with patient assessment techniques and the management of medical problems commonly encountered in this patient population such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Renal Transplant Service
The adult renal transplant service introduces the student to both the common surgical problems occurring in-patients with chronic renal failure and renal transplant surgery. Patients receive either living-related or cadaveric donated kidneys on a 24-hour availability basis.
Surgical Intensive Care Unit
The SICU rotation introduces the student to the management of critically ill patients with surgical illnesses. Common problems encountered in this population include respiratory failure with ventilator dependency, intra-abdominal sepsis, multiple system organ failure and a variety of infectious diseases.
Surgical Oncology
The surgical oncology services of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center are utilized for clinical experience by the Physician Assistant Program. Students participate in the perioperative and operative care of patients with a variety of oncological conditions. Students may select elective rotations in Breast Service, the Colon and Rectal Service, Gastric and Mixed Tumor Service, Thoracic Service and Head and Neck Service and Gynecology Service.
Urology Service
The urology services at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell Campus and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center introduce the student to diseases of the kidney, ureters, bladder, prostate and genitalia. Common problems in these patients include the diagnosis and management of stone disease, infections and tumors.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The plastic and reconstructive surgery rotation introduces the student to cosmetic surgery as well as the indications and operative management of tissue defects as a result of treatment for cancer or trauma using reconstructive techniques. Sites include New York Presbyterian Hospital and several outpatient locations.
Orthopaedic Surgery
The orthopedic rotation include the Fracture Service at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell Campus and a variety of elective specialty services at The Hospital for Special Surgery and a private orthopaedic clinic in Queens. These services introduce the student to the management of traumatic injuries and diseases of the spine, hip, knee and hand as well as sports related injuries.
Neurosurgery Service
The neurosurgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell Campus introduces the student to commonly encountered surgically related problems including the management of head trauma, various central nervous system tumors and back injuries.
Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) Service
The ENT service at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell Campus focuses on introducing the student to the evaluation and treatment of ear, nose and throat disorders mainly in an outpatient setting. Students also participate in the surgical management of patients when indicated.
Other Elective Clerkships
Students are encouraged to take advantage of a wide variety of surgical as well as primary care elective rotations available at Cornell and our affiliates. All elective clerkships must be approved by preceptors and the Program staff in accordance with PA Program policies.
Additional clinical rotations will continue to be introduced during each academic cycle.
