Course Goals
The goal of the Obstetrics-Gynecologic clerkship is to develop the knowledge and skills to determine any variations from normal in the reproductive system of women.
Course Objectives
By the end of the Obstetric-Gynecologic clerkship, the student should be able to:
- Obtain a complete history and physical examination on female patients. They will be competent to do a pelvic examination, obtain a Pap smear, and do screening for genital tract infections.
- They will be required to write up three history and physical examinations with a discussion of this individual patient care. These will be determined to be satisfactory by the Course Director.
- They will function as a member of the Obstetrics-Gynecologic team.
- They will observe and assist in the Gynecologic operating room and the delivery room.
Course Description
The Obstetric-Gynecologic clerkship is a six-week course taken in the third year. There are two separate clerkships. Students assigned to the New York Hospital-Queens will spend all six weeks there, with rotations on the Obstetric and Gynecologic service. At the New York Presbyterian-Cornell Hospital, the students will spend two weeks on Gynecology, two weeks on Gynecologic-Oncology, and two weeks on Obstetrics at Lincoln Hospital.
Student Responsibilities
Student's responsibilities include:
- The student is to be integrated into the team of health care professionals caring for the patient. This includes the supervising Attendings and Residents.
- The student will attend and observe the delivery of babies and gynecologic operative procedures.
- The student will perform some procedures under appropriate supervision.
Didactic Sessions
At the New York Hospital-Queens and New York Presbyterian-Cornell the student will attend the scheduled Attending lectures, the weekly preceptorship with the Course Director, and the scheduled meetings with the Preceptors, With the House Staff, they will attend teaching rounds, Quality Assurance rounds, and House Staff teaching conferences.
Evaluation and Examinations
Each student's performance will be assessed by the Residents, Attendings, Preceptors, and Course Director. The written examination on the final day of the course is the National Part II examination for Obstetrics-Gynecology plus an essay question prepared by the Course Director. The students will also have an oral examination with at least two Attendings.
Grading
Grades are determined by the Course Director, based upon the Attendings, Residents, and Course Director evaluation of the students, as well as their performance on the written and oral examinations.
