Within each module, the teaching is shared by a number of clinical departments, including Medicine, Pathology, Radiology, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery, as well as Pharmacology. The course content includes material contained within traditional Pathophysiology and Pathology courses, and required and recommended texts have been selected from just such sources. The course organization has been designed specifically to enable examination of problems that cut across traditional disciplines, and thus approximate clinical problem solving.
Difficult topics
This year, each module leader may designate a “difficult topic”, on which to focus attention. This focus is intended as a respite from the relentless “survey” character of the course. The extra attention will likely include a timely journal article plus some additional background reading. The difficult topic may be taken up within lecture format, large group discussion, small group discussion, or PBL. The module quizzes will be be expanded this year to include 3 to 5 additional questions on this difficult topic.
