Scheduling
Weill-Cornell Course
The scheduling of elective courses at WCMC is done by the Course
Scheduler (CS) program, or by agreement with the appropriate
faculty sponsor in the case of research electives, teaching or
independent electives assistantships, and the medicine and urology
subinternships. You will be expected to schedule 28 weeks to satisfy
4th year requirements, (some of which you may have completed in
3rd year) and complete the necessary paperwork.
Scheduling Independent Electives
Students may arrange Independent Electives, which are educational
experiences not part of Weill's regular elective course offerings.
You must fill out an Independent
Elective form. To do so, you must be sponsored by a Weill
faculty member, who will be expected to evaluate your performance
at the conclusion of the elective period. The completed form,
signed by the faculty sponsor, must be submitted to your advisor
for approval. The form must then be submitted to the Office of
Academic Affairs for approval. No credit
will be given for any independent work that is completed without
the prior approval of the Dean's Office. See
the Electives Coordinator in Room C-118 to obtain the necessary
form. Likewise, credit for electives will be posted only
upon receipt of the elective evaluation from your supervisor.
Changes in Course Schedules
Changes in schedules arranged through CS may be made on-line,
through Course Scheduler. Changes may be made 30 days prior to
the start date of the course in question, If
for some reason the deadline has passed, you must obtain
the approval of Dean Gillers to drop or add a course, please do
so by e-mailing the Electives Coordinator at electives@med.cornell.edu
(you may not approach the sponsors of the course directly.) Approval
will be granted only under the most compelling circumstances.
STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DROP COURSES ONCE THE COURSE
HAS BEGUN. PLEASE NOTE: The faculty sponsors of the
following courses have requested that students not request to
drop them after the final rosters have been distributed. Please
do not include any of these courses in your schedule requests
unless you are fully committed to participation in them:
Procedure for Arranging Electives at
Other Medical Schools, and International Electives
Should you be interested in doing an elective in a foreign country,
please consult with Dr. Madelon Finkel concerning opportunities
and possible funding. All students, regardless
of funding or site, must submit a proposal for review and approval
to the International Committee, Chaired by Daniel Fitzgerald,
M.D. All electives outside of Weill Medical College and its affiliates
must be approved by your advisor and the Office of Academic Affairs
prior to participation. Please see the Electives Coordinator,
in C-118 to obtain the necessary form.
The Electives Coordinator will fill out the necessary
portions of any formal applications which need to be submitted,
and will obtain the necessary signatures, letters of recommendation
from the Senior Associate Dean's Office, or transcripts, which
must accompany an application. Should faculty recommendation letters
be necessary rather than, or in addition to, any of the above
items, it will be the student's responsibility to obtain such
letters. You will be advised, either by email or phone, when your
application and supplementary documentation are signed and ready
for pick-up at the Office of Academic Affairs (C-118). Please
remember that it is very important that the Office of Academic
Affairs be able to contact you at all times. If you leave
New York City, or will be off-campus during office hours for extended
periods of time, please contact the Electives Coordinator or the
Registrar prior to your departure to leave information
that will enable us to contact you quickly if necessary.
Evaluation
WCMC faculty sponsors will submit evaluations of student performance
in all electives completed at WCMC affiliated hospitals. Evaluation
forms will be sent to faculty sponsors/department by the Office
of Academic Affairs. Students participating
in electives at other institutions, however, are responsible for
providing the person at the other institution who will be evaluating
their performance with an evaluation form. Credit for participation
in away electives cannot be awarded unless a formal evaluation
of work completed is received in the Office of Academic Affairs.
Before leaving to participate in an off-campus
elective, you should obtain an evaluation form from the Electives
Coordinator. The form should be presented to the supervisor
of the elective at the conclusion of your participation, with
the request that it be filled out promptly and returned to the
address printed on the form. The exact dates of your participation
must be on the form. You should, if possible, provide the Electives
Coordinator with the complete mailing address of your supervisor
for all electives away from WCMC and its affiliated hospitals.
