Clinical Trials: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including emphysema and asthma

In 2004, Dr. Ronald Crystal received a grant from the NIH for the study of the genetic effects of cigarette smoking and genetic susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The division is becoming increasing recognized as an international authority on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and has established an active outpatient center devoted to the diagnosis and care of patients with emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Through the center, patients receive a thorough evaluation and treatment plan for the management of their disease, and are offered the opportunity to participate in studies evaluating genetic susceptibility to COPD.
