Participant and Clinical Interaction Resources – Transforming the General Clinical Research Center

The PCIR, an expansion of the present General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), is a network of resources and facilities, providing an efficient infrastructure for team research and for the seamless flow of research from bench to bedside to the community.  It is the central node of the Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) – the site at which novel lab bench discoveries are ultimately translated to best practices within the community in a team-oriented environment.  Forming an integrated, dynamic resource, it includes professionally staffed patient care inpatient and outpatient units for adults and children, and resources and services for conducting scientifically sound studies.  A trans-institutional resource, it will be integrated with partnering institutions and a robust community engagement and outreach program - a GCRC without walls.

The PCIR also brings its infrastructure to the culturally rich and diverse NYC communities.  A mobile van unit, staffed with a dedicated nurse, phlebotomist, driver and other members of the Translational Research Support Team (TREST), will travel to the designated communities to carry out research and provide additional access to research subjects, particularly those with limited mobility. Population-based studies, outcome studies and health services in targeted communities are ideal for this service.

Our existing GCRC at WMC is one of the oldest NIH-funded centers, with continuous funding since 1961.   Recently renovated, it accommodates children and adults in separate units with a total of 15 inpatient beds and two large outpatient units with reception areas, 10 examination rooms and two special study/treatment rooms. The PCIR as designed will provide a framework for the future conduct of clinical and translational research.

MSKCC Experimental Therapeutics Center

Outpatient facilities extend to the Experimental Therapeutics Center (ETC) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center – a center designed to advance new therapies from the laboratory to the clinical setting. It provides an infrastructure that allows investigators to conduct time-sensitive studies and complex research that can be so crucial to early drug development.  The ETC also provides another site where diverse groups of physicians and scientists can meet and collaborate.  The experience of the MSKCC staff and the resources of the ETC can be expected to substantially enhance the productivity of the CTSC.
