The Clinical and Translational Education Program (CTEP), a well-coordinated and integrated clinical and translational (C/T) research training program utilizing the diverse trans-institutional faculty for teaching and mentoring (see figure 1). The trainees carrying out clinical/translational mentored research have access to an expanded clinical research center (PCIR), technical and support core facilities, many other state-of-the-art facilities and a large and diverse patient population.
Figure 1: Creating a Pipeline of C/T Researchers

The participating members of the faculty are from Weill Cornell Medical and Graduate Schools, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, the Hunter College School of Nursing, the Hunter College Gene Center (Research Center for Minority Institutions) and the extensive community outreach program coordinated through the Cornell University Cooperative Extension-NYC.
The principal objective of the Clinical and Translational Education Program (CTEP) is to develop a pipeline of highly trained C/T researchers (Figure 1) to facilitate the transfer of clinical research – from bench to bedside – into clinical practice. Rigorous training of future investigators in the science and ethics of clinical and translational research is essential to address the shortage of qualified clinical researchers to increase the odds of their success and ultimately impact the quality of clinical care.
Through CTEP, the next generation of C/T investigators will be educated, C/T research activity expanded, and a cultural shift toward C/T research among partner institutions achieved. The integration of basic and C/T training programs will also serve to encourage the basic scientists to develop translational research careers.
Since our CTSC is designed to promote translational research in a team-oriented environment, all team research members will be provided with the opportunity to obtain the necessary training to establish long-term C/T research careers. In sum, an environment for research education has been created that is broad in scope, providing training careers in multidisciplinary team-based translational science at varying levels.
The specific aims of the CTEP are to provide:
Our unique and large student pool and talented trans-institutional and multi-disciplinary faculty has allowed innovative programs to be developed and offered under CTEP. This unique and flexible training program is based upon a common core curriculum (Figure 2).
