Community Engagement and Research - An Integrated Initiative for the Underserved

An innovative and extensive Community Engagement and Outreach Program was designed to access New York City's large ethnically, racially and age-diverse patient populations. Cornell University Cooperative Extension-NYC (CUCE-NYC) leads this initiative. It is the "hub" of community participation, and coordinating activities.  In existence in New York City for over fifty years, its novel community participation, research and educational organization extends to the underserved throughout all boroughs in NYC, and qualifies it to play a major role in community engagement and research within the CTSC. A broad-based community engagement and research program was developed that will identify and address the special health needs of diverse New Yorkers and enhance public trust in clinical and translational research.

The principal objective of the program is to ultimately improve the health status of the community through research. The specific aims are designed to create a framework for efficient research/community collaboration and include integration, research, outreach and education. It provides unparalleled access to diverse populations for recruitment, population-based studies, outcomes research and implementation of good clinical practices. The inclusion of culturally and racially diverse groups will ensure their participation and their necessary representation in the development of treatments that will benefit all populations.
