Track II: Masters Degree in Clinical Investigation in Two Years
Learning Objective: To provide both the core curriculum of coursework in the first year, and in the second year, a more in-depth clinical research experience crafted to a trainee's specific interests through a mentored
clinical research project conducted on the Clinical & Translational Research Center which requires 80% of a trainee's time. In addition, the Masters Degree track includes specially focused elective classes. Upon successful completion of
both years, a trainee will receive a degree of Master of Science in Clinical Investigation.
Requirements for completion of program: 38 credits, including the 22 credits for completion of Track I, 8 credits in elective courses and/or skill acquisition workshops and 8 credits for the mentored clinical research project.
Track II Summary
- Core Curriculum - Same as Track I
- Electives - 8 credits: Depending upon their research project and areas of particular interest, trainees will select eight credit hours of elective courses summarized in the table below. Additional optional supplementary courses and skill acquisition workshops may also be taken.
- Mentored Clinical Research Project: A mentored clinical research project is a major part of the Masters Program in Clinical Investigation and is conducted by the trainee under the mentorship of an established clinical investigator with a commitment to training. During the first year, the trainee meets with the chosen mentor to formulate the research proposal. During the second year of the program, a clinical research project conducted on the Clinical Research Center; a) requires 80% of the trainee's time, b) and utilizes the skills acquired by the trainee during formal coursework. The clinical research project includes:
- Developing a hypothesis;
- Performing clinical research;
- Collection and statistical analysis of data;
- Presentation of results at an annual Clinical Research Symposium; and,
- Submission of results as a research proposal and/or in a form suitable for publication in a scientific journal.
- The final results of the research project are presented to an examining committee at the end of the second year for final approval.
