Major clinical programs include a Leukemia/MDS Service, Lymphoma/Myeloma Center, Breast Center, Urologic Oncology Program, Stem Cell Transplant Service, Solid Tumor Service, Thrombosis and Vascular Medicine Program, and Hematology Consultation Service. Our faculty are active in a broad range of research areas, including angiogenesis, hematopoiesis, stem cell biology, immunology, vascular biology, viral oncogenesis, tumor biology, cellular adhesion mechanisms, gene regulation, molecular pathogenesis of B cell malignancies, AIDS virology, and cell signaling. Clinical research activities include participation in a large multi-institutional cooperative group (Cancer and Leukemia Group B) as well as institutional programs in bone marrow/stem cell transplant, gene therapy, immunotherapy, and novel chemotherapy research.
Three fellows are matriculated into the program each year. The fellowship is structured in three one-year blocks. The majority of the first year is spent on various clinical services of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, an 850 bed academic hospital on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. This hospital serves as both a community hospital for a large urban population and a tertiary care referral center. Fellows participate actively in caring for patients in a dedicated 44 bed hematology/oncology unit. An 16 bed bone marrow/stem cell transplant unit, and consultation services for both non-malignant hematology and oncology. There is an emphasis on ambulatory management of cancer patients as well.
The second year of the Hematology/Oncology Training Program consists primarily of supervised laboratory and /or translational clinical research with protected time for each fellow. Under the guidance of a mentor, fellows learn the design of research studies, research methodology, and interpretation of data. Participation in an NIH-funded Training Program has been available for interested fellows. In order to maintain the essential clinical experience, fellows continue to take care of the patients in their outpatient practice, and continue to participate in conferences, journal clubs, and other activities of the Hematology-Oncology Division. A training pathway involving clinical research and formal training in health services research is also available.
The goal of the third year of fellowship is to allow the fellows to consolidate their educational experiences in the diagnosis and management of hematologic and neoplastic disorders, and/or to pursue their research training. Third year fellows rotate through the consultation Service, the inpatient clinical services, and continue to participate in the Ambulatory Care Clinic. Third year fellows also have the opportunity to pursue individual interests and areas of study in Hematology and Oncology, including the continuation of research projects begun in the second year, pursuit of clinical research, or participation in clinical electives.
Fellows participate in a number of educational conferences throughout their training, including case conferences, Divisional Grand Rounds, journal clubs, and institutional tumor boards including breast, genitourinary, thoracic, and gynecologic cancers. In addition, a fellow-oriented core course covers all aspects of benign hematology, hematologic malignancies, and neoplastic diseases. Fellows are involved in clinical research projects early in their training; each fellow will be directly involved in the design and conduct of clinical trials, both institutional and through CALGB. The Medical Center is located in a Tri-Institutional Campus that includes Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, providing unique opportunities for collaboration and education.
Our Fellowship Program is currently participating in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Please visit ERAS at http://www.aamc.org/students/eras.
