Weill Cornell has emerged as one of the world’s foremost academic medical centers, providing superior patient care, conducting breakthrough medical research, and training the next generation of scientific and medical leaders. The Medical College is rooted in the belief that medical education, research and patient care are inter-dependent, and that excellence in all three yield the best results for the patient, the student and society as a whole.

Weill Cornell is committed to the development of a research agenda and public health policy responsive and sensitive to the needs of the community. Now our plans, as part of the Discoveries that Make a Difference Campaign, are to build on our recent success and foster a comprehensive biomedical research enterprise that will push the boundaries of knowledge and understanding about human health and disease. This vision requires strategic investments, including the construction of a new biomedical research complex, in the heart of the Weill Cornell Medical Center campus on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Our new research facility will provide the foundation for unprecedented growth and foster landmark contributions to medical research that can be quickly translated into innovative patient care techniques.

Our new Biomedical Research Building will more than double our current research space capacity, a critical and lofty expansion in today’s greatly constrained real estate environment.  These additional laboratory facilities will address severe space shortages, and also enable us to recruit an additional 50 new top-tier scientists in areas such as Cancer Biology; Cardiovascular Disease; Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders; and Global Health and Infectious Diseases – to name just a few.

Designed with an open-floor plan to facilitate communication and collaboration, the new research building will transcend the barriers of academic departments and encourage interdisciplinary research. Its proximity to the Weill Greenberg Center, our new award winning ambulatory care facility, will further enhance communication between investigative researchers and practicing clinicians. Furthermore, the new facility will accommodate advancing technology and “core facilities” for the medical institutions and academic community in our vicinity, which attract patients, students, physicians and scientists from around the world.

As 2008 commences, senior members of the Weill Cornell administrative team are actively pursuing all the necessary New York City approvals and maintaining an aggressive timetable for the new building’s construction.  Meetings with local and neighboring institutions regarding the project have proceeded well and all have expressed enthusiasm for our plans. We look forward to completing the approval process and celebrating a milestone groundbreaking event for the new Biomedical Research Building in fall 2008.

We hope you share in our vision for the planned growth of our research enterprise. The impact of the new facility will be felt by patients far and wide as our researchers continue to uncover the origin of deadly and debilitating diseases and explore new treatments and therapies that will provide hope and comfort for all.
